Filed under rantsRuckus was shut down yesterday. This may come as a surprise to many people, but I wholeheartedly expected it.
Ruckus was decent idea, but it is fatally flawed as a solution to student piracy. The perception that Ruckus helped alleviate the problem rather than was part of the problem is severally wrong.
Ruckus did not deliver what was demanded: unrestricted free music. To compete with file sharing an alternative must be better, and to be honest the only advantage I saw to Ruckus was the legality.
I could not run Ruckus because I use Linux. I could not copy the music to my MP3 player because of the DRM. These are not the characteristics of a solution.
Perhaps those in the music industry will see reason and offer a more reasonable solution. I'd be fine with an ad-supported and reasonably cheap service with no restrictions. I suppose some services like that already exist but I haven't looked at them. Perhaps free music is the way to go then.
