Bike helmets sadly a rarity

I'm a big proponent of bicycles. The university I attend, the University of Maryland, College Park, seems to harbor many bicyclists due to the size of the campus. What irks me is how few people wear helmets when riding. I'm a minority by a huge factor I couldn't estimate accurately.

I've thought long and hard about what I'd say to people who ask why I wear a helmet. The first thought would be the pain of hitting my head, or maybe the potential for traumatic brain injury. That and I don't care about "being cool" or whatever kids today want. (Disclaimer: I'm 19 as of this writing so maybe I should know why kids today don't wear helmets.)

Today I thought of a simple statement that sums up my thoughts: "If you don't wear a helmet you have nothing to lose by hitting your head." Think about it. It basically says if you're so stupid to not wear a helmet you really can't get any dumber so it doesn't matter whether or not you protect your head. Too bad my phrasing isn't as obvious as it could be. Maybe I should clear it up like "If you are dumb enough to not wear a helmet you have nothing to lose by hitting your head."

'Because I feel like wearing one' would have saved you all the pseudo-philosophical thoughts. Good for you for wearing a helmet, but at 19, you should have other things on your mind than trying to correct fellow-cyclists.

"mind your own business" would have sufficed as well.

Thanks for the comments.

"Because I feel like wearing one" and "Mind your own business" do nothing in the humor category, which I was trying to win huge in.
